Due to transportation convenience and undeveloped space in the surrounding station districts, HSR stations have been repeatedly elected as the ideal venue for Taiwan Lantern Festival in recent years. For the 2016 Taiwan Lantern Festival starting from light testing on Feb. 19 to the closing ceremony on Mar. 6, the 16-day event is held in HSR Taoyuan Station District and co-hosted by Tourism Bureau of MOTC and Taoyuan City Government. Since September 2015, BOHSR and THSRC have commenced sorting out station district matters including land lease and traffic planning.
In this year's lantern festival, HSR has played a significant role in passenger dispersing and transfer. Under the premise of maintaining HSR passenger service quality and fast evacuation of the crowd, THSRC upheld past traffic dispersing experience for lantern festivals to deliberate arrival and departure diversion dispersing measures for passengers inside the station and total passenger control for crowds outside the station. In addition to distributing manpower, utilizing resources and guidance signage and holding HSR passenger propagandas, THSRC had also established an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to fully mobilize personnel in completing the traffic dispersing mission for this national celebration event.
Moreover, in addition to the announced 115 additional trains to cope with the 228 Peace Memorial Day holidays, THSRC has added another 43 Taipei-Taichung non-reserved trains (17 southbound and 26 northbound) for the lantern festival. Furthermore, THSRC had mobilized 18 southbound and 19 northbound non-reserved trains due to onsite crowd situation. On Feb. 28, passenger loading of HSR reached 267 thousand creating a new record for maximum loading per day. On the same day, passenger count in HSR Taoyuan Station reached 146 thousand which was 330% more than on general weekends also creating a record for passenger count in Taoyuan Station.
