為了避免其他雜訊光源影響量測數值，COMS感應器前需裝設高頻濾光鏡，以阻擋過濾其他短波長光源，即使在陽光強烈狀態下仍舊可量測鋼軌。COMS感應器內有8顆數位訊號處理器（Digital Signal Processor, DSP），以64位元並列輸出數值資料，正因為有高速取樣頻率 (每秒4,500幅)，所以軌道量測車可在15 km/h，每隔2mm進行一次取樣分析。
The main function of the rail measurement & recording vehicle is to measure the wearing condition of the rail. The operating unit may take appropriate responses or resolving countermeasures according to the measurement results to maintain the safety of the EMUs.
The rail measurement & recording vehicle has two-way driving and operating power, which is integrated with a modular detection system. The vehicle used non-contact laser system to measure the situation of rail wearing conditions by forming a relative triangle position from the laser, 4,500 frames per second high-speed camera and the rail and then calculate the rail wear by using triangulation principle.
Using the coherent optical characteristic of laser, a single wavelength light source, the laser would form a different reflection angle when irradiating on the uneven surface of the rail. Then, the rail image will be captured through the high-speed COMS sensor in which each point of the pixel will correspond to a different gray value at the COMS sensor end and the degree and the number of bumps can be acquired by numerical analysis. When the surface is more uneven, its value will be relatively volatile.
In order to avoid other noise sources that may affect the measured value, the high pass band filter needs to be installed before the COMS sensor to block and filter other short wavelength light sources. This way, measurement of the rail can still be achieved even under strong sunlight. The COMS sensor has 8 DSP digital signal processors and outputs numerical data by 64-bit parallel. Due to the high speed sampling rate (4,500 frames per second), the rail measurement & record vehicle takes samples every 2 mm at 15 km/h.
The examination system can measure the gauge, alignments, longitudinal level, lateral level, cant, twist, rail corrugation (short, middle, long), longitudinal wear, rail profile, rail side wear and tread wear measurements of the left and right rail. The system can provide visualization, visual monitoring and output of the measurement data, so that the operation and maintenance units can grasp the status of the whole rail line and take appropriate maintenance arrangements.
